2. The Beauty of Our Signature Matte Finish
All MyCROCEMENT™ systems feature our premium, ultra-durable Matte Top Coat. We intentionally designed our lineup around a true matte sheen to deliver the authentic look and feel of traditional European plaster:
- Raw, Tactile Aesthetic: Mutes harsh light reflections to showcase the natural movement and subtle hand-troweled movement of the microcement.
- Flawless Concealment: Unlike high-gloss finishes that amplify minor substrate unevenness, matte absorbs light to create a smooth, visually cohesive surface.
- Protective Core: Delivers maximum water resistance and surface protection without adding an artificial plastic sheen.
3. Color, Lighting & Environmental Dynamics
Microcement is a dynamic material that responds directly to its environment, lighting conditions, and application technique. Understanding these factors will help you achieve the exact visual balance you desire. Learn how our protective topcoat functions in our MyGUARD Protective Sealer Guide →
Artificial Lighting & Kelvin Rating
- 2700K–3000K (Warm White): Enhances the golden, sandy undertones in neutral shades like MyTOASTED OATS and MyBABY FAWN, making living spaces feel cozy and inviting.
- 3500K–4000K (Neutral / Daylight): Provides the truest representation of our palette. Keeps greys like MySTONE PATH crisp and stops organic tones like MyOLIVE BRANCH from shifting muddy.
- 5000K+ (Cool White): Can make lighter shades like MyWHITE BIRCH appear stark or clinical. If using cool LED setups, pair with warm accent decor, natural wood, or brass fixtures to balance the space.
Directional Natural Light
- North-Facing Rooms: Receive cool, diffuse natural light that can flatten surface color. Use warmer neutrals (MyBABY FAWN, MyTOASTED OATS) to inject natural warmth.
- South-Facing Rooms: Flooded with intense, warm light throughout the day. These spaces handle deeper or cooler tones (MySTONE PATH, MyOLIVE BRANCH) beautifully without making the room feel dark.
Sheen Interaction & Accent Lighting
Because our Matte Top Coat absorbs light rather than bouncing it back, textured trowel marks create soft, micro-shadows rather than harsh glare. Accent lighting—such as wall sconces, recessed LED strip channels, or directional spotlights placed parallel to the surface—will dramatically highlight hand-troweled texture.
Surroundings & Reflective Casts
Microcement acts as an ambient canvas. Surrounding high-contrast elements—such as rich hardwood cabinetry, bold tile, or large green views through windows—will bounce subtle color casts onto matte microcement walls.
4. Trowel Technique & Pro Tips
- Trowel Pressure & Burnishing: The harder you compress and burnish the surface during your final smoothing pass, the darker and more mottled the shade becomes. Lighter pressure maintains a flatter, more uniform color tone. Use a flexible polycarbonate trowel to prevent dark friction marks on lighter shades.
- Stroke Pattern: Short, sweeping wrist movements create intense variegated movement—ideal for modern industrial features. Long, smooth arm passes create a serene, subtle plaster look.
- Wet vs. Dry Shift: MyCROCEMENT™ appears darker directly out of the pail when wet. As it cures, it lightens significantly. The true, final shade emerges only after the material has fully dried and the MyGUARD Matte Top Coat has cured.

How do I choose the right MyCROCEMENT™ color for my space?
Consider your lighting and room size. Lighter shades like MyWHITE BIRCH or MyBABY FAWN help maximize natural light and visually expand smaller areas like compact bathrooms. Deeper earthy tones like MySTONE PATH and MyOLIVE BRANCH add warmth and ground larger, open-concept spaces or feature walls. We always recommend testing swatches under both natural daylight and your warm artificial lighting before making your final selection.
Can I mix or blend MyCROCEMENT™ shades to create custom colors?
Our ready-to-use, premixed microcement is factory-pigmented to guarantee perfect color consistency across all pails in your batch—eliminating the risk of streaking or tone shifting common with manual site-mixing. Because it comes pre-tinted, we do not recommend intermixing pails on-site. If you need a specific custom shade for a larger commercial project, reach out to us directly.
Will the topcoat sealer alter the final color of my MyCROCEMENT™?
Yes, slightly. Applying our topcoat sealer typically enriches the pigment, deepening the color by about half a shade—similar to how water darkens a dry stone. A Matte topcoat keeps the shade as true to its raw look as possible, while a Satin finish adds light reflectivity and a slight visual richness.
Will MyCROCEMENT™ colors fade over time or in direct sunlight?
No. We use premium mineral pigments engineered for high UV stability. When sealed correctly, your finish will maintain its original color depth without yellowing, chalking, or fading—even in areas with heavy direct sunlight or outdoor exposures.
Does lighter MyCROCEMENT™ show dirt, stains, or water spots more easily?
Because MyCROCEMENT™ creates a seamless, grout-free surface, dirt and grime have nowhere to hide compared to traditional tile. However, lighter shades like MyWHITE BIRCH will show topical surface dirt sooner than medium or dark tones. Daily cleanup is identical regardless of color—simply wipe down with a pH-neutral cleaner.
Can color variations occur between different pails or batches?
Because MyCROCEMENT™ mimics natural plaster and stone, subtle tonal movements are part of its organic charm. To guarantee complete uniformity across your entire project, make sure to order all the pails needed for your surface area at the same time so they originate from the exact same inspection batch.
How will lighting affect the final color of my MyCROCEMENT™?
MyCROCEMENT™ is a dynamic, mineral-based finish that shifts under different light sources. Warm artificial lighting (2700K–3000K) highlights golden and sandy undertones in shades like MyTOASTED OATS or MyBABY FAWN, creating a cozy feel. Cooler daylight bulbs (4000K+) or cool north-facing windows keep grey tones like MySTONE PATH crisp and modern. For the truest color representation, evaluate your space under the exact lighting temperature and fixtures you plan to use daily.
Why does MyCROCEMENT™ only come in a Matte finish?
We intentionally offer an ultra-durable Matte finish because it best captures the authentic, raw look of traditional European plaster. Unlike gloss or satin sealers, which produce a shiny reflection that can highlight substrate imperfections, our Matte topcoat eliminates glare, softens light reflections, and enhances the tactile depth of your hand-troweled work—all while providing complete water resistance.
Why does the color look darker during application than in the pictures?
MyCROCEMENT™ goes on darker directly out of the pail because of the moisture content in the pre-mixed formula. As the material cures and moisture evaporates, it lightens significantly to its true tone. The final, accurate shade will only fully emerge once the MyCROCEMENT™ is completely dry and MyGUARD has fully cured.
